hello this is David Igor Hernandez and I want to thank you for taking this course on the person of the Holy Spirit now this course is supplemental to my book encountering the Holy Spirit in every book of the Bible and well I am going to cover many of the facets of his person and I am going to show you in the scripture in many places where the Holy Spirit can be found I won't be able to cover everything from Genesis to Revelation and that is what we recommend the book for encountering the Holy Spirit and every book of the Bible covers where the Holy Spirit can be found in every single book from Genesis to Revelation but to start this course off I want to talk to you about who the Holy Spirit is now this is an important foundation to understand before we can get into the material of the Holy Spirit in every book of the Bible you see when I was first saved and I began to pray and seek the Lord I remember wondering if I could even seek an audience with the Holy Spirit I wondered if I might be committing some type of misdemeanor idolatry by addressing the Holy Spirit instead of Jesus himself but what I found as I began to study and as I began to learn about the person of the Holy Spirit was that he is in fact a personal being so number one we have to understand that the Holy Spirit is not just a force he is influential but he's not just a force he's not an object he's not an idea he's not some mystic cloud that hovers about with no personality will or intentions he is in fact a person with the mind with the will with emotions with desires and who can communicate with us on a daily basis I like to say that the Holy Spirit is the spirit of Jesus people often say if only Jesus were here if only Jesus were with me right now I would ask him about this scripture if only Jesus were with me right now I would ask him to cover this need or to embrace me in this area of my life or to show his power strong in this circumstance but this is the reality that we have everyday with the 24/7 abiding presence of the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit is the spirit of Jesus he is Jesus with you so we must have be afraid to address the Holy Spirit or to treat him as a personal being the scripture says in John chapter 15 verse 26 but I will send you the Advocate the Spirit of Truth he will come to you from the father and will testify all about me you notice Jesus here refers to him as a he the spirit of truth John 16:13 through 14 the scriptures say but when he the spirit of truth comes he will guide you into all truth for he will not speak on his own initiative but whatever he hears he will speak and he will disclose to you what is to come he will glorify me for he will take of mine and will disclose it to you you can also see a similar reference in first John chapter 5 verses 6 to 8 now the Holy Spirit there we see that the holy spirit can commune with us because he is a person and this is in fact confirmed in 2nd Corinthians chapter 13 verse number 14 where the Bible says made the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ the love of God and the Fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you all so because the Holy Spirit is a person we can fellowship with him it means we can commune with him we can converse with him we can have interaction with the Holy Spirit every single moment of every single day as you go about your day you can have that fellowship you don't have to wait for a special church service or a special conference you can experience the presence of the Holy Spirit 24/7 not weekly not daily not even hourly but moment by moment he can sustain you with his power and his presence now the scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit also has a will 1st Corinthians chapter 12 verse 11 says but all these worketh that one in the South same spirit dividing to every man severally as he will the Holy Spirit can speak Acts chapter 8 verse 29 says the Holy Spirit said to Philip go over and walk along beside the carriage so here we already see the Holy Spirit has a will the Holy Spirit can speak the Holy Spirit is referred to as a person and the Holy Spirit can fellowship with you and I why then is it that we call him the Holy Spirit consider this verse Matthew chapter 28 verse 19 therefore go and make disciples of all the nations baptizing them in the name of the Father the Son and the Holy Spirit think about it the Father the Son the Holy Spirit the word THAAD doesn't take anything away from the personal attributes of that person being named the father is a personal being the son is a personal being the Holy Spirit is a personal being but also from that scripture I want you to notice something not only is the Holy Spirit described as personal but he is described as distinct from the father and the son we read that in 2nd Corinthians 13:14 and we also see that in Matthew chapter 3 verse 16 where the scripture says after his baptism as Jesus came up out of the water the heavens were open and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and settling on him and later on in that very same portion of Scripture we see that the father speaks saying this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased and there for the first time in the new testament we see the father the son and the holy spirit all mentioned together at one time yet very clearly distinct from one another now this is important for a very specific reason not only is the Holy Spirit personal not only is the Holy Spirit distinct from the father and the son but the Holy Spirit is divine now this really does seem to some people to make them very uncomfortable because we are very familiar with calling God the Father God we are very familiar with calling God the Son God but when I say the Holy Spirit is God when I say we can worship the Holy Spirit when I say we can pray to the Holy Spirit these statements make us uncomfortable not because they are unbiblical but simply because they are unfamiliar but the scripture makes it very clear that the Holy Spirit is referred to as the Lord in 2nd Corinthians chapter 3 verse 17 the Bible says now the Lord is that spirit and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty the Holy Spirit is described as one with Christ 1st Corinthians chapter 2 verses 10 to 11 say but it was to us that God revealed these things by his spirit for his spirit searches out everything and shows us God's deep secrets no one can know a person's thoughts except that a person's own spirit and no one can know God's thoughts except God's own spirit in other words there's that oneness there is that unity by the way this is why I call the Holy Spirit the Holy Spirit and not just Holy Spirit you and I are referred to as spiritual beings I am a spirit you are spirit 1st Thessalonians chapter 5 verse 23 says we all have a spirit so I am a Holy Spirit he is the Holy Spirit no we are not God no we're not one in the same with the Trinity but if you and I are spiritual beings and we are holy we are also holy spirits but he is the holy spirit the only one who is divine now the Holy Spirit is also referred to as being omnipresent Psalm chapter 139 verse 7 says I can never escape from your spirit I can never get away from your presence so there we see that the Holy Spirit is one with Christ he's called the Lord he's called the Spirit of God he is omnipresent and very clearly he's described as God Genesis chapter 1 verses 1 through 2 say in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth the earth was formless and empty and darkness covered the deep waters and the Spirit of God was hovering over the surface of the waters so here we see that the Holy Spirit is personal he is distinct from the father and the son and he is just as divine as the father and the son so the Holy Spirit is God and we must be afraid to address him as such he is not the lesser of the Trinity he is not some lower form of deity he is in fact just as powerful just as divine just as holy as the father and the son and when we honor him in this way when we come to know him as a person instead of just an idea or concept we can begin to experience that wonderful fellowship on a moment-by-moment basis that very same that I was just describing so who is this holy spirit he is the Spirit of God he is the spirit of Jesus in the book of Genesis he's the spirit that hovered above the face of the deep and that word there in the Hebrew Hubbard is brooded in other words he incubated like a dove or a bird broods over its eggs the Holy Spirit brooded over creation incubating the words and the commands of God causing all of creation to come into existence in the book of Exodus we see him as the fire of evangelism he sent forth a call to Moses appearing before him as a fire in the burning bush all throughout the Old Testament we see him time and time again think of the Book of Daniel where the holy spirit is seen in Daniel and called the spirit of excellence he's the same spirit who gave wisdom to the writer of the Proverbs in Ecclesiastes he's the same spirit who inspired within the heart of King David poetic stanzas of worship in Ecclesiastes he's the spirit of purpose he's called eternity within our hearts all throughout the scriptures time and time again we see him working we see him as the one who stirred the prophets to speak Oracles of God declarations about the future and insights into their culture and their generation we see him in the disciples moving in power in the book of Acts we saw in the teachings of Jesus and we see that he's the one who raised Christ from the dead as Hebrews describes him in the book of Revelation he's the one who gave to the lover of Jesus John revelation of Christ that was so powerful so vivid that it was frightening the Holy Spirit active and alive powerful and on the move all throughout Scripture the Holy Spirit is heavens greatest evangelist John chapter 16 verses 7 through 11 say but in fact it is best for you that I go away because if I don't the Advocate won't come if I do go away then I will send him to you and we when he comes he will convict the world of its sin and of God's righteousness and of the coming judgment the world's sin is that it refuses to believe me righteousness is available because I go to the Father and you will see me no more judgment will come because the ruler of this world has already been judged now think about that in verse 10 righteousness is available because I go to the fall what else came because Jesus went to the Father it was the power of the Holy Spirit he said I can't send the Holy Spirit unless I go to my father so there's this exchange that happened in the heavenly place where Christ took his seat at the right hand of the Father by the way Christ still seated there and the father is still seated on the throne so the Holy Spirit is the one among us he is the omnipresence of God but here we see that the Holy Spirit is the one who opens the heart of the sinner you notice that the scripture says he'll convict the world of its sin he is heavens greatest evangelist in fact he's the greatest evangelist who ever lived no other person is more sold on Jesus than the Holy Spirit no other person loves Jesus more than the Holy Spirit no other person can explain Jesus better than the Holy Spirit and if you'll surrender to him he'll give you that same love he'll give you that same fire he'll give you that same understanding but he is the one who convicts the sinner who causes those Stoney's stubborn hard hearts to become hearts of flesh that can be receptive to the commands of God the Holy Spirit works on the heart of the unredeemed drawing them into the light of salvation drawing them and calling them forward to Christ that is what the Holy Spirit does he is heavens greatest evangelist so much of what's done today in the name of evangelism is emotional pleading and pressure tactics and while I don't necessarily believe in the sinner's prayer I do believe in sinners who pray so there's nothing wrong with a sinner using a prayer as a vehicle to surrender their life but if it's not bursts of the Holy Spirit it will not be true conversion we can persuasively preach the gospel and many times Paul the Apostle did reason with the unbelievers you can see this in the book of Acts you can hear him talking about it all throughout his epistles he reasons with people and he pleads with them and he presents the case but ultimately we must recognize that it is the Holy Spirit who brings revelation of the word it is the Holy Spirit who anoints our preaching it is the Holy Spirit who empowers the word of the gospel and this is the great thing about the Holy Spirit is he will empower his gospel he will back it with signs and wonders he will back the message of truth with conviction so the real dilemma here is if there is no backing by the Holy Spirit then you're probably not preaching the gospel if what you're preaching doesn't result in the miraculous then it's time to begin preaching the gospel the Holy Spirit will always back his own message he will never back your message he will never back my message he's only going to back his own message he's remember what Jesus said he'll testify of me the Holy Spirit doesn't even testify of himself he testifies of the son the Holy Spirit is not going to testify of myself the Holy Spirit is not going to testify of you the Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus and if we preach that message true to how the Holy Spirit wants to empower true to how the Holy Spirit presented it in the scripture if we'll preach it faithfully the Holy Spirit will empower it consistently ultimately it is always the Holy Spirit remember that carnal efforts cannot produce spiritual results I remember one time I was ministering at a church service and the power of the Holy Spirit was moving mightily there was a heavy anointing on that place it was like a cloud of glory had arrested on the congregation and so I'm giving this altar call as I normally did and I'm pleading with the sinner give your heart to Jesus today is the day of salvation bring your sin bring your shame bring your questions bring your doubts to the cross I was pleading with them and I was calling them to come forward and receive Christ and I remember nobody was responding to the altar call and the Holy Spirit told me this he said have everyone in the building begin praying tongues and at first I hesitated because I thought Lord but I want to reach the unbeliever right now but the Holy Spirit insisted have everyone in tongues well I'm not one to argue with the Holy Spirit he does it his way and so I said okay every believer in here pray in the Holy Ghost and this had broken even some of my paradigms because I'm very analytical and on some of those points I said Holy Spirit I don't know but he's often shown me that his ways are higher than my ways and so I had everyone praying the Holy Spirit just for five minutes it was very orderly just for five minutes praying the Holy Spirit and after they were done praying in tongues I watched as a man about my age walked across the room down the aisle and hid his knees in front of the altar he began to weep and shake and I saw him there crying at the altar and I approached him and I said sir may I ask why you're crying he said because for so long I've been trying to find God and today he found me that man gave his heart to Jesus right there in that moment a soul was saved why not because of my preaching tactics not because of my ability to persuade not because the music was playing it's not by power nor by mine but it's by my spirit says the Lord Luke chapter 12 verses 11 to 12 say and when you are brought to trial in the synagogues and before rulers and authorities don't worry about how to defend yourself or what to say for the Holy Spirit will teach you at that time what needs to be said the Holy Spirit Guides both the hearer and the speaker he gives you the words that you need to speak he is heavens greatest evangelist now in the next session I'm going to continue this first portion of the course which is who is the Holy Spirit and I'm going to finish talking to you about who is the Holy Spirit in the next session but first I want to recap here remember the Holy Spirit is a personal being he's not an it he's not a force he is distinct from the father and son yet he is just as divine as they are the Holy Spirit is the one who works through us as heavens greatest evangelist convicting the hearts of wicked opening them to salvation he is our helper he is the one who empowers our ministry we cannot do it without him so I want you to remember that always involve him never neglect him never overlook his work welcome the Holy Spirit in your ministry and he will convict the soul the Holy Spirit is God the Holy Spirit is personal the Holy Spirit is heavens greatest evangelist I want to tell you more about who the Holy Spirit is in the next session
