Sunday it is my prayer that the Lord will help us to focus what is so special for us on this Super Sunday because here will receive God's gift of freedom and grace so think about your life and what can you do to help make this truly a Super Sunday may the Lord bless our worship time together but before we begin which you can tree stand up and turn around a grid goes around you and if you don't know them introduce yourself one announcement if I may the final hymn in the bulletin it is incorrect so follow what you have there 706 is the correct one may the Lord bless our worship time together in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit beloved in the Lord let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God our Father beseeching him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness our health is in the name of the Lord I said I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord Almighty God our maker and Redeemer we poor sinners confess to you that we are by nature sinful and unclean and that we have sinned against you by thought word and deed wherefore with me for refuge to your infinite mercy seeking and imploring your grace for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ almost merciful God who has given your only begotten Son to die for us have mercy on us and for his sake grant us remission of all our sins and by your Holy Spirit increase in us through knowledge of you and of your will and through obedience to your word to the end that by your grace we may come to everlasting life through Jesus Christ our Lord amen Almighty God our Heavenly Father has had mercy upon us and has given us His only Son to die for us and for his sake forgives us all our sins to those who believe on his name he gives power to become the children of God and as promised than his Holy Spirit he that believes that his baptized shall be saved grant this Lord unto us all we continue with the interact-as's found in a bulletin insert in you or Lord do I take refuge in your righteousness deliver me and rescue me becoming a rock of Refuge rescue me oh my god from the hand of the wicked for you or Lord are my hope upon you I have leaned from before my birth glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit as it was in the beginning is now and will be forever amen in you or Lord do I take refuge the Lord be with you let us pray to the Lord Almighty God you know we live in the midst of so many dangers that in our frailty we cannot stand upright grant strength and protection to support us in all dangers and carry us through all temptations through Jesus Christ your son our Lord who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God now and forever the Old Testament reading appointed for this fourth Sunday after the Epiphany is from the Prophet Jeremiah selected verses now the word of the Lord came to me saying before I formed during the womb I knew you and before you were born I consecrated you I appointed you a prophet to the nation's then I said O Lord God behold I do not know how to do not say I am only a youth for to all whom I send you you shall go and whatever I command you you shall speak do not be afraid of them for I am with you to deliver you declare us yourself for work arise and say to them everything I command you do not be dismayed by them lest I dismay you before them and I behold I make you this day a fortified City an iron pillar and bronze walls against the whole land against the kings of Judah its officials its priests and the people of the land they will fight against you but they shall not prevail against you for I am with you declares the Lord to deliver you this is the word of the Lord please join me in saying the gradual praise the Lord all nations extol him all peoples for great is his steadfast love toward us and the faithfulness of the Lord endureth forever ascribe to the Lord the glory due his name bring an offering and come into his courts the Epistle reading comes to us from first Corinthians chapter 12 final verse and then of course with the great great chapter on love Paul writes I will show you a still more excellent way if I speak in the tongues of men and of angels but have not love I mean noisy gong and a clanging cymbal and if I have prophetic powers and understand all mysteries and all knowledge and if I have all faith so as to remove mountains but have not love I am nothing if I give away all I have and if I deliver up my body to be burned but have not love I gain nothing love is patient and kind love does not envy or boast it is not arrogant or rude it does not insist on its own way it is not irritable or resentful it does not rejoice at wrongdoing but rejoices with the truth love bears all things believes all things hopes all things endures all things love never ends as for prophecies they will pass away as for tongues they will cease as for knowledge it will pass away for we know in part and we prophesy in part but when the perfect comes the partial will pass away when I was a child I spoke like a child I thought like a child I reasoned like a child when I became a man I gave up childish ways for now we see in a mirror dimly but then face to face now I know in part then I shall know fully even as I have been fully known so now faith hope and love abide but the greatest of these is love this is the word of the Lord if you are able will you please rise in honor Jesus words and is only gospel and this will be the basis of our meditations this morning Jesus went down to Capernaum a city of Galilee and he was teaching them on the Sabbath and they were astonished at his teaching for his word possessed Authority and in the synagogue there was a man who had the spirit of an unclean demon and he cried out with a loud voice hey what have you to do with us Jesus of Nazareth have you come to destroy us I know who you are the Holy One of God but Jesus rebuked him saying be silent and come out of him and when the demon had thrown him down in their midst he came out of him having done him no harm and they were all amazed and said to one another what is this world for with authority and power he commands the unclean spirits and they came out and reports about him went out into every place in the surrounding region and he rose and left the synagogue and entered Simon's house now Simon's mother-in-law was ill with a high fever and they appealed to him on her behalf and he stood over her and rebuked the fever and it left her and immediately she rose and began to serve them now when the Sun was setting all those who had any who were sick with various diseases brought them to him and he laid his hand on every one of them and healed them and demons also came out of many crying you are the son of God but he rebuked them and would not allow them to speak because they knew that he was the Christ and when it was day he departed and went into a desolate place and the people sought him and came to him and would have kept him from leaving them but he said to them I must preach the good news of the kingdom of God to the other towns as well for I was sent for this purpose and he was preaching in the synagogue's of Judea this is the gospel of the Lord let us now confess our comforting and Christian faith with the words of the Apostles Creed on the front part of your hymnal page 109 teacher I believe in God the Father Almighty maker of heaven and earth I don't know what possessed me to go to the synagogue in Capernaum that Saturday but I felt compelled was almost like someone had pushed and pulled up me to hear the rabbi from Nazareth how I got there I don't know why I came I don't know except for the fact I like to hear false doctrine so that I can deceive others I am a man without a name without a family without a home I'm a man who had demon possessions that made my life hellish I could not overcome them but why I came that day to the sinner god I really don't know but I felt compelled to come and as I was in the synagogue I heard this man speak with such power and such authority that he make things happen that day is truly a day that is limit memorable I was emphases on was demon possessed and in that day when Jesus came to the synagogue and he began to speak and those words were like sweet comforting blessed word I've never heard any of all of the other rabbis in Capernaum teach like he did it truly was amazing when he spoke something happened and all of a sudden I began to shake and I screamed in a loud voice ha you have come to destroy us Jesus of Nazareth I know who you are the Holy One of God all of a sudden my whole body shook and he said be quiet him come out of him and I fell to the ground dazed and confused and as I was just beginning to come through between consciousness and dis in I heard other people in the synagogue say what kind of word is this that even demons listen to him when I finally came through I began to realize for the first time that perhaps a young human you see with demon possession these fallen angel they have taken over my life and I could not get rid of them so much so that they made my life hellish and when people saw me they got frightened and I ran away I was afraid of myself because I didn't know what was going on in my body all my life my desire was always evil to do hurt for others why I cannot answer but in all of my years I've never heard someone speak like the rabbi from Nazareth and his words were comforting it gave me a new look on life it gave me hope for the first time that I could be truly human that I dare I say it I might even be loved by someone even this man we called the rabbi from Nazareth could it be that he even loves me who was demon-possessed emphasis on demon-possessed I'll be back don't go there was a transformation in my life I was no longer afraid of what the demons did to me because for the first time I felt free there was joy in my heart there was hope in my heart I was changed not only from the outside but even from the inside for the first time I truly had hope that I could live in the service of this rabbi all of the other rabbis before could do nothing like him and when he spoke that word of authority had such power that it changes lives even mine who once was demon-possessed but oh what a joy filled my heart now I travel around the countryside and tell everyone about the God of mercy and the God of compassion who took me from the demon possession and freed me think of that word freed me so that I'm not longer bound by the demons I was not harassed I was not being heard I was free truly free and every essence of the word and all the joy I can tell you I can tell you of the joy that filled my heart and the hope that has come upon me but not everybody was happy with the rabbi from Nazareth people from all around Capernaum in the Galilee and area came because they had seen what he could do and he healed many others beside me who were demon-possessed but there were some people who were not happy at all with Jesus they were described in the Pharisees and the Jewish leaders even one of our own Caiaphas said you know nothing it is better that one man die than the whole nation suffer time moved on and for a brief moment I began to doubt am i really free from these demons will they come to haunt me again will they bother me and then I remembered a portion from the prophet Isaiah that said the suffering servant will come and when he come he will open the eyes of the blind and free the prisoners and give freedom to those who are fresh could that portion of Scripture apply to me those who are oppressed it only lasted for a few moments but I knew for certain that this rabbi is the long-expected Messiah but the Jewish leaders did not like him and so they planned to destroy his life they worked with Pilate and the soldiers and they put him on a cross what he suffered the punishment that is not fit for anyone to suffer a brutal cross well life slowly ABB's out of you for three hours he was on the cross slowly moment by moment trying to breathe for what for his sins no for the sins of the whole world God in our Hebrew Scripture declared that he would come to atone for the sins of the world and Moses said cursed is everyone who things on a tree and this rabbi hung on a tree for the sins of the world the whole world including you and including me today I'm no longer demon-possessed today people who see me want to listen to what I have to say children are not scared of me they delight in hearing the story over and over and over and I never never get tired of telling people about the day the miracle happened may I ask you some questions I believe I am in the village of Hartford that's what I was told may I be bold to ask you questions where do you go when you are tempted what do you do when you don't an aren't able to sleep how do you deal with your challenges where do you go to find comfort and solace and peace and where do you cling for to receive hope and help when you are hurting when your life is hellish where do you go may I be bold to point you to the rabbi from Nazareth the rabbi from Nazareth is the answer to all of your problems he was the answer to my problem of demon possession and he spoke with authority the demon left me he said shut up and come out of him in all of my years of going to the synagogue I've never heard an Arab I any scribe any Pharisee teach with the authority and the power that brought comfort and consolation and neither Pilate nor the scribes nor the Pharisees not even the cross could hold him contain him or silence him not even the tomb that Joseph Arimathea and Nicodemus placed him in not even the tomb could hold him but he rose and with that resurrection he brought freedom and forgiveness and mercy and compassion and hope to people like me and it is my prayer that it is for people like you people who go through all sorts of trials and hardships people who struggle with hellish events in their lives that tear their hearts out it is indeed a privilege for me to come and share with you the joy that the Savior has given to me you have to remember you are also privileged to share God's good news you have a responsibility to tell others about what Jesus has done for you in your life you see it was Jesus who had the greatest responsibility of all times in all seasons for all nations for all tribes it was Jesus the rabbi from Nazareth who dwelled in Capernaum who took upon him the sole fact of going to the cross to atone for all of the sins and to bring freedom and forgiveness the hurting people I know I know it's a challenge to be responsible with the privileges you have to do what you are given to do but don't be afraid the rabbi from is a from Nazareth sent me on my way to show myself to the priest so that I may speak of what happened to me that is also your privilege as well therefore I ask you will you join me once demon-possessed now have been free to go to every Judean village even to the samaritan village and even here in Hartford and share the miracle that Jesus works in your life I pray that you will play a part as I am privileged to do today among and fear not demons Jewish leaders Roman armies Roman soldiers Pontius Pilate or anyone else in all of the universe can take away from you the
